Small sample size generalization

The generalization of linear classifiers is considered for training sample sizes smaller than the feature size. It is shown that there exists a good linear classifier, that is better than the Nearest Mean classifier for sample sizes for which Fisher’s linear discriminant cannot be used. The use and performance of this small sample size classifier is illustrated by some examples.

A multivariate two-sample mean test for small sample size and missing data.

We develop a new statistic for testing the equality of two multivariate mean vectors. A scaled chi-squared distribution is proposed as an approximating null distribution. Because the test statistic is based on componentwise statistics, it has the advantage over Hotelling's T2 test of being applicable to the case where the dimension of an observation exceeds the number of observations. An appeal...

Gesture Recognition Under Small Sample Size

This paper addresses gesture recognition under small sample size, where direct use of traditional classifiers is difficult due to high dimensionality of input space. We propose a pairwise feature extraction method of video volumes for classification. The method of Canonical Correlation Analysis is combined with the discriminant functions and Scale-InvariantFeature-Transform (SIFT) for the discr...

Sample Size Planning 1 Running Head : Sample Size Planning Sample Size Planning with Effect Size Estimates

The use of effect size estimates in planning the sample size necessary for a future study can introduce substantial bias in the sample size planning process. For instance, the uncertainty associated with the effect size estimate may result in average statistical power that is substantially lower than the nominal power specified in the calculation. The present manuscript examines methods for inc...

Confidence regions for the multinomial parameter with small sample size

Consider the observation of n iid realizations of an experiment with d ≥ 2 possible outcomes, which corresponds to a single observation of a multinomial distribution Md(n,p) where p is an unknown discrete distribution on {1, . . . , d}. In many applications, the construction of a confidence region for p when n is small is crucial. This concrete challenging problem has a long history. It is well...
